Current Projects
Health Professions Initiative
Through a grant provided by the
Connecticut Health
Foundation, the Office of Community and Outreach Programs has
embarked on a project to determine the impact of mentoring by fraternity
members to increase the number of under-represented college students
seeking a career in dentistry. The project was launched in November
2004, with a Forum: “Exploring Fraternity Efforts to Increase the
Presence of African American Males in the Health Professions”.
Currently, the top four African American fraternities have joined to
form the Health Professions Initiative Advisory Board. The
purpose of the Advisory Board is to develop strategies that will guide
the identification of potential candidates for a health professions
career track. Long-term goals include designing a model program that can
be implemented nationally.
The Advisory Board is formulating joint activities that will focus on
recruitment and retention of under-represented students into health
professions. Specific activities will be posted as they materialize. |
